In March 2023 I delivered the International Society for First World War Studies second annual Dennis Showalter Memorial Lecture at the National Army Museum.
It is often said that we live in an age of perpetual crisis, but it appeared much the same to people living through the First World War. This lecture looked beyond institutional responses to crises and investigate the experience of crisis during 1914-18. In doing so, it explored the very different ways in which individuals - especially combatants - made sense of the chaos and confusion facing them.
